I make mistakes. When I do, they give me the squirms. Even the smallest misstep haunts me. I may, at times, be too hard on myself. If you, on the other hand, have ever justified a lack of attention to detail with the phrase, “Hey, we’re not doing brain surgery here, relax!”, I want you to immediately stop reading this and put a staple in your tongue.
It’s happened before and it will happen again: someone asks me, “You’re a comedian. Why do they even have ‘All-Girl’ comedy shows anyway?”. My knee-jerk response is, “why do you even care?”. But, I know better. My short answer is: because they enhance your experience of comedy, even if you never attend one. Since you asked, the longer answer is: the All-Female comedy show model is responsible for such things as the thriving Canadian music scene and could save television in this country. It’s not like there’s a lot of them happening in the first place, but they should be mandatory.
I’m happy to say that I have only a few “uncomfortable” dating moments filed away in my portfolio of romance. That includes the “non-starters” where it just wasn’t going anywhere for anyone, which were somewhat awkward. Slightly more unpleasant were the dates where it was painfully obvious (to me and the waiter) that it was my companion who was feverishly scrambling for an exit strategy.
A few years ago, a stand-up comic I know and like made an interesting comment about a situation that I have experienced, and continue to face, with regularity. That situation- people who are organizing fundraising events for charities, or non-profits, ask if I would be prepared to appear at them without pay.
I’m sure you’ve attended Town Halls, or conferences where the panels, or “fireside chats”, are flat (or worse, cringe-worthy). But, even in instances where they are reasonably tolerable, I believe this is a HUGE missed opportunity for organizers. Having a professional moderator, or Host, can elevate these communications opportunities from beyond informative to inspiring. Continue reading “Painful Panels”
